It takes a practice to train a kid

2005-04-07 - 1:04 p.m.

The kitchen project is moving along and the countertops have been installed.

They are awesome.

You see, the name of the Silestone color that we picked is Stellar Fire. Like its name indicates, it is a blood red color with some tiny, tiny chips of mirror embedded in it. They catch every single source of light in there, even with the dimmest of lights.

Doing justice to its name, it provides the kitchen with a source of reflected light that is at the same time subtle and bright. Like a zillion tiny stars shining on the blood-red countertop.

I know it sounds very weird, but it looks really striking. Very retro too. And with the stainless steel appliances, it will be really, really awesome.

Speaking of kitchens, last night we had dinner with Lucia and Miles. It was great to enjoy an honest-to-god homecooked meal after a couple of weeks of pizza, Chinese food and Boston Market.

(Thanks guys!)

(And if I see another pizza, I will scream!)

We also got the chance to take a look at their new kitchen. It is absolutely awesome and it looks like right out of a magazine.

I particularly liked the navy-blue cabinets, combined with the very striking beige, brown and blue countertops. And the appliances look like something out of a science fiction movie.

If you add to that the beautiful mosaic that Giuliana made for them, the final effect is unbelievable.

Really, really cool.

And last but not least, last Sunday we went to see Sin City.

Wow.

It was really awesome.

One of the things I liked best about this film is the fact that they respected the look and the feel of the original graphic novels. (And of course, Sin City puts back the "graphic" back into "novel.")

Gory? Yes.

Disturbing? Yes.

Funny? Absolutely, in a grisly sort of way.

(And just so you know, Benicio del Toro makes a very funny corpse.)

And no, there is not that much blood involved. Who needs blood when the grisly element is right there? This is one of those movies that takes advantage not only of what they show you but also of what they don't.

And what they don't can be even more disturbing than what they do.

The other thing is that it took a lot of guts not to change the storyline and give it a "happy-happy-joy-joy" ending or to make the heroes more likeable.

For instance, I am a big fan of Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." I have, however, refused to see the movie based on the fact that they changed everything.

How?

For one thing, Sean Connery would never be able to plan Moore's Alan Quatermain. (And believe me, I am a Connery fan.)

Oh, he can play Alan Quatermain, all right. Just not Alan Moore's Quatermain. For one thing, Moore's Quatermain was definitely *not* the leader of the group. Mina was, and no, she was not a vampire.

Mina is actually some sort of deranged Mary Poppins, prim and proper and doesn't even have to raise her voice to get the big boys to recognize her leadership.

The difference between Mina and Mary Poppins is that Mina does not believe in a "spoonful of sugar." She has only to give you the "look" and that's all you need.

Mina has never fired a shot or stabbed anyone, let alone bite them. But she's got the loyalty of the group whether they like her or not.

So there.

But go see Sin City. It is really good.
