It takes a practice to train a kid

2004-10-05 - 1:35 p.m.

This weekend we went to University. It was a blast. I took Sorcha's class on "Making the most out of your museum visit." It is a terrific class that I recommend to everyone.

The classes I taught were well attended and I believe -- and hope -- that everyone had fun. In the end, I ended teaching three classes as opposed to two. The person who was supposed to teach the class on history of siege warfare simply did not show up. It is the second time that this person does that. I will organize a siege track, and he will volunteer immediately. Then he will not show up. No apologies, no explanations.

Next time he volunteers, I will simply not take him seriously. If I am going to end up replacing him over and over, I might as well sign up for the damned thing myself and bring decent handouts as opposed to doing it from memory and hope for the best. Sigh.

On the other hand, the class on basic armor for beginners that Mary and I taught went very well. This in spite of the fact that we did not have much time to coordinate it, what with me running around trying to sell the condo and buy the house. I was pretty happy.

As for my "Zen, Fitness and the Art of Defence" class, I was rather surprised to have about 10 people in there. To be honest, I had thought that I would be lucky if I got 4. I still need to do a little updating to the handout and post it to the Fallen From Grace website for general consumption.

I had a pre-teen in that class, who is doing boffer weapons. We discussed several forms of exercising to improve the game, but I am afraid that I did not mention during the class that resistance training is not for people 16 and under. Calistenics and other things such as gymnastics or running are okay. Weight-lifting is a no-no. Although I don't see him trying to start lifting weights like Arnold Scharzenegger, I must see that the clarification makes it to the handout just in case.

And the latest on the house, we are closing very soon and we have an appointment with Voell kitchens tomorrow afternoon. They are the first of the kitchen specialists that we intend to interview. I have told Marcellus that we are not buying a house, we are buying a project. I love projects.

Note to self: Avoid Home Depot at all costs. We did that with our last kitchen and although the price was right, the service was awful and I had to fight the urge to start strangling people a la Homer Simpson. But that's a story for another day.
