It takes a practice to train a kid

2004-09-29 - 1:18 p.m.

Okay, it seems that our ordeal is finally coming to an end. Or maybe it is starting. Who knows?

For those who are not up to date, Marcellus and I have been working on selling our condo and buying a new house -- which has been an endless source of amusement for friends and coworkers as we have been updating and remodeling said condo for the past two or three years. The reason? Our plans were to stay where we were for the next 5 - 10 years, thank you very much.

However, with all the SCA stuff we do, plus having a teenager at home (not to mention Scandal the Cat), we have found ourselves rather cramped in our abode despite having a lot of our stuff in a storage unit. If you think about the fact that there are not three, but 8 people living in the house, this makes a lot of sense.

Why 8? Well, there is Bob and Laura and Carlos, and then Marcellus and Belphoebe and Eamonn, plus the Baron and Baroness of Ponte Alto. (And don't forget Scandal the Cat!) So we are cramped.

Anyway, before Pennsic, we decided to sell the condo and look for a townhouse. My goodness! Selling a house is a lot of work. Not only we re-painted the whole thing, but re-carpeted (which was a nightmare) and we moved most of our furniture and stuff out to yet another storage unit. The latter so the house could show better. (Thanks FFG'rs for your help. Could not have been able to do it without you!) The result of all this is that we listed the house and got a offers from the first day. And they say that the market is slowing down. (Of course, it helps when you have the one unit that has the new kitchen, new bathrooms, and all sorts of goodies!)

Our main problem (read, I was panicking) was to find a suitable house. It had to be large, in a good neighborhood, and be in the same zip code as ours as we want to keep Carlos in the same HS. Oh, and construction no earlier than 1984.

That's a tall order in our zip code. Most houses are older construction and with small rooms. Newer construction seems to be in the way of "glorified condos," meaning two story homes, one on top of the other, advertised as "townhomes." Saw a couple of those. Hated them.

(And of course, the gazillion dollar townhomes with monster garages that I would kill for but we don't want to be "house poor.")

Then it happened. Last Friday, at the height of my panic, this place came up for sale. Older construction, but in a fantastic neighborhood. Drove by it to see if the size was suitable but there was no way to find out. We finally got to see it on Monday and boy were we impressed! Huge rooms, vaulted ceilings, two decks, and more land that I can shake a stick at. Beautiful place! (And great neighborhood!)

So we will have to update the kitchen and bathrooms. Big deal. We would do it anyway, what with me being addicted to remodeling and Marcellus being an architect. We are doomed, I'm telling you, doomed!

At any rate, we have made an offer and we should be finding out today if we got it. Keep those fingers crossed.

The funniest part? The house is on Sherwood Ct, next to the following Courts: Maid Marian, Little John and Friar Tuck.

It's destiny, I'm telling you.
